According to the dictionary, a dilemma is “a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones.” Many correctional facilities in this country are now facing a dilemma — between maintaining vigilance against contraband and having the means to do so.
Since interdicting contraband is a mission-critical task, the only path forward for these institutions is to do more with less. In other words, they have to unlock new efficiencies to get the job done. Before discussing how they can do that, let’s take a look back to find out how this dilemma arose.
