Google announced that it is revamping several programs to perform better on tablets.
The tech giant launched Android 12L earlier this year to make tablets simpler to use. At its I/O developer conference back in May, the company revealed plans to upgrade more than 20 Google applications on tablets to optimize them for larger screens. Now the firm has announced many new Workspace capabilities for Android tablets that allow users to share more across Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep.
The most noticeable feature revealed is the ability to drag and drop text or pictures between two Workspace applications. According to Google, users can now drag and drop text or pictures from applications like Chrome or Sheets directly into an existing document or spreadsheet cell. Users may rapidly upload files to Google Drive by dragging and dropping them into the application. They may add links to Drive files by dragging them into an application such as Keep.
Google also revealed that users will now be able to open two windows for their drive side by side, providing more visibility into their files. To open a file in a new window, users just need to pick the three-dot menu on any Drive file and select “Open in a new window.” Google explained that this enables users to obtain the required information without repeatedly pressing the back button.
Last but not least, Google is also working on introducing shortcuts for those who have a keyboard linked to their tablet. Users can swiftly navigate around Drive, Docs, and Slides using basic keyboard shortcuts. Some examples of these actions are select, cut, copy, paste, undo, and redo. Previously, this required one to slow down and take their hands off the keyboard.
Scott Blanksteen, Android’s senior director of product management, said, “These updates will roll out to Android’s large screens with Google Workspace and personal Google Accounts over the next few weeks. And stay tuned for more updates as we continue to add new features for Google apps on Android’s larger screens.”
