General AI startup, Anthropic PBC is seeking to raise new funding on a valuation worth up to USD 40 billion.

An unidentified current investor who interacted with corporate executives is quoted in the report that was released by the sources. According to reports, negotiations are still in their early stages, and it’s unclear if investors will accept such a high valuation.

According to the sources, Anthropic would also make a presentation for investors at the private tech conference held by Morgan Stanley the following month. It should be mentioned that while startups don’t usually use investment banks to obtain money, they do in complex financing rounds, and Anthropic has previously raised money from institutional investors rather than only venture capital firms.

Almost two weeks have passed since it was revealed that Anthropic’s primary competition, OpenAI, was looking to raise USD 6.5 billion at a USD 150 billion valuation. Now, it has been revealed that Anthropic is looking to secure further capital.

Anthropic has raised around USD 7.6 billion, including forward commitments, heading into a new round. Amazon.com Inc. is the biggest investor in Anthropic, having made two rounds of investments totaling USD 2.75 billion in March and USD 1.25 billion in September 2023.

Given their growing connection, Amazon may be involved in any future round that Anthropic raises. While Google LLC is developing its own internal AI models and Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc. have invested in and worked with OpenAI to offer generative AI services, Amazon has joined with Anthropic.

Nevertheless, Zoom Video Communications Inc., Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce Ventures are among the additional investors in Anthropic.

As part of their cooperation, the two businesses have made Anthropic’s large language models available on Amazon Bedrock. As per the report from August, Anthropic will likely support latest iterations of Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant.

Anthropic, a company founded in 2021 by former leaders of OpenAI, focuses on developing AI systems that are safe, steerable, and interpretable. It gives ethical model creation priority to reduce unpredictably bad or negative outcomes.

The company’s primary artificial intelligence system, Claude, runs on “constitutional AI,” a kind of AI that guides its outputs with predetermined principles to prevent harmful or biased reactions.
